Solution for Mac OSX audio issue

If you are using Mac OS 10.3, 10.4 or 10.5 and when you click PLAY on a game show you get an error message of "Handler not found in object", then your Mac has probably been effected by an obscure conflict between the Apple OS and Audacity, the freeware audio editor. This page will tell you how to fix that. (Here is the Apple technical memo about the conflict.)

The main symptom of this conflict is that Game Show Presenter is unable to play sound. Normally when you play a quiz show, you hear music with the title screen. But the conflict disables the sound and instead presents the error message mentioned above. If this happens to you, here's what to do:

First, you should make sure you have the most recent stable version of Audacity software to prevent this from happening again. You can get Audacity here.

Next, follow these three steps recommended by Apple:

  1. From your Mac desktop, open Audio MIDI Setup (found under Applications / Utilities), then check the Audio Output settings. (See image below)
  2. Select Audio Devices tab. Then under "Properties For" select "Built-In Output". Then change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz. (If it is already set to that, select it anyway.)
  3. Quit Audio Midi Setup.

Now relaunch Game Show Presenter PLUS Edition, load a quiz show and click play to see if the problem was resolved.

Note: If you use Audacity again, it is possible the conflict will reappear. Here are more details from the Audacity site.
